For years, Metro has consistently identified addressing gaps in Bulky Waste management as a regional priority. For low-income, disabled, and vehicle-less families, properly disposing of items that cannot be placed in curbside garbage is often near impossible. Beginning in 2022, we have partnered with the City of Portland and Trash For Peace to develop equitable, scalable models of Bulky Waste collection.

These pilot projects began as annual events at low income multifamily housing complexes, and have grown into full service, no-cost, individually scheduled hauling services for families to clean up their apartments, avoid eviction, and increase their standard of living. What’s more, we have put on “Free Furniture Fair” events to redistribute cleaned, gleaned, and refurbished items back into the communities from which they came, saving them from the landfill.
